How to make a song a ringtone on Android

Remember the days when the hottest phone in town was the one with polyphonic ringtones? Your new phone would come with hundreds of such ringtones. Some of these ringtones were really annoying but all you could do was choose the least annoying one as your ringtone.

If you wanted a customized ringtone, the most you could do was subscribe to a service so that your preferred tone would be sent as a text message to your phone.

Apart from the annoyance problem, you would also have to contend with lack of uniqueness. In fact, it was quite common to find multiple people checking their pockets and bags whenever a phone rang, due to most of the phones having the same ringtones.

Well, worry no more because there are ways in which you can turn your favorite song into your ringtone.

Transfer of music file from the computer

There are a number of ways in which you can transfer your favorite song from the computer on to your android device. However, we shall go with the simplest means; which is through a USB cable.

The first is actually having the song on your computer. If you do not already have it, you can always download it. Always ensure that you download the song from legal sites or by legal means.

Once you have downloaded the song, you will have to locate it on your computer. It could be in any folder, depending on your settings. The location could range from downloads folder to videos or even music folder.

Found The Song?

Once you have found the song, ensure that you note down the location. Then, you link your phone to the computer via a standard micro USB cable. Once you attach your device to your computer, you are likely to receive a pop-up message asking how you would wish to use the device.

From the various options provided, you should choose to explore the device’s files and folders. In some instances, you will not receive this pop-up message. In such a case, you will have to open a new explorer window and then locate the phone which would be listed among your computer’s drives and storage devices.

Return to the location of the downloaded song and drag the song wherever you like into your device’s ringtones folder. Alternatively, you may right-click the song and select ‘copy’ before right-clicking the destination folder and selecting ‘paste’.

Once Transfer is Complete

Once this transfer is complete, you may disconnect your phone from the computer. Thereafter, you tap on the settings app on your phone and choose “Sound”. Tap the “Ringtone” option and your list of ringtones will be displayed.

Assuming that you had saved the song in its name, you just tap on this name and then apply. Your new customized ringtone is set. If you do not like this method, there is another way of setting a ringtone on your Android device.

Use of an App 

There are a lot of apps out there that you can use to make ringtones. In this article, we shall use the example of Ringtone Maker. This application is free in the Google playstore and is quite easy to use. Furthermore, it has a friendly user interface.

First and foremost, you will need the song, which you wish to make your ringtone, to be stored on your Android phone. If the music file is not on your device, you can either download it or transfer it from a computer or from any other storage device through appropriate means.

You then open the Ringtone Maker app. Once you do this, a list of all the sound files which are stored on your device will be displayed.

Locating Downloaded Files

However, you may fail to locate the music file which you intend to use. In such a case, you will tap on the menu button, which is found on the upper right corner and select “Browse”. This will enable you to browse your phone storage for the music file which you wish to use as your ringtone.

Once you have located your music file, you will now have to edit it. Tap on the green button next to the file and from the menu displayed, select “Edit”. A button with sliders will appear on the screen.

You will utilize the sliders in adjusting the section of the song which you want to play as your ringtone. An appropriate ringtone is set at a maximum of 30 seconds. You can have a preview of the selected ringtone by tapping on the play button.

Once you are satisfied and done with the selection, you can save the ringtone. To save the ringtone, you tap on the save button which is located at the top of the screen.

The ringtone will be listed by the name which you entered while saving it. Your new ringtone will be saved in the ringtones folder.

Once again open the settings app and select “Sound”. Tap on “Ringtone” and from the list displayed, you can now select your preferred ringtone.

You should also know that downloading and transferring music files onto your device tends to use up a lot of space on your phone. This would make the phone to perform slower than before. You can avoid this by deleting all the unnecessary junk from your phone.

Besides that, be aware that some of these file are full of viruses and malware. They may cause your device to crash or even result in security breaches. Always have an antivirus scanner on your device to protect you from viruses.
