Downloading music from YouTube

Any time you think of accessing music videos, the name YouTube automatically comes to mind. This a video sharing website founded in 2005 by three former PayPal employees.

The website contains music videos, documentary films, movie trailers, audio recordings, live streams and video blogs otherwise known as “vlogs”.

Apart from individual uploads; media entities also upload their content on YouTube. This is through the YouTube partnership program in which corporate entities offer their material to YouTube.

Revenue Streams

Most of the videos on YouTube are free while there are channels which charge a fee to view their exclusive content.

In case you are wondering how the website earns its revenue, here is the answer. Google AdSense is a program which targets ads depending on site content and audience. It then remits the revenue to YouTube.

With YouTube, you can view, share, rate, comment, upload and download videos as well as subscribing to other channels and users.

An analysis done in August 2018 by a web traffic analysis company, ranked YouTube as the second most popular website in the world. As the year 2018 progressed, more than 500 hours of content were uploaded to the site, which translates to over a billion hours of content being watched daily.

One of the main reasons as to why YouTube is popular is that you are able to download music from the site.

If you are wondering why anyone would download music from the site instead of just streaming, here are some reasons.

Once you download music, you can listen to it anywhere. The need for internet connectivity would be eliminated.

You must have also noticed that streaming music is severely affected by internet connectivity issues. It involves buffering and this means unnecessary interruptions.

Once you download a music file onto your device, you basically own the music. It will always be on your storage device and you would access it whenever you wish.

Pocket Friendliness

Apart from a few subscription based channels and film rentals, downloading music from YouTube is free. You do not need to have a budget for owning good music.

This is unlike in the past when you had to buy individual albums at not so friendly prices.

So how do we download music from YouTube?

First and foremost, you should be aware of the fact that downloading videos from YouTube is not always legal. YouTube has to allow for a particular item to be downloaded; otherwise you would be engaging in an illegality.

Although most video downloaders do not allow their users to download copyrighted content, it is possible to rip the music from the music video.

Also avoid hanging around the YouTube download sites for long as many of them are known to engage in crude money making processes.

Through Online tools

This involves the use of online video downloaders. If you want to avoid the task of downloading particular software, then this is the best option for you.

The first step is you click on the video you wish to download and then you copy its URL from the address bar. You then go to the online video Home Page.

On the page, you will find a bar that reads “Search or enter YouTube link”. You will then paste the URL on the bar and press the Enter key.

After a few seconds, several options on the file formats will be displayed. Select your preferred format and wait for it to load.

You then click on the download button provided near your preferred format.

If you want to avoid online methods, you can always use the desktop clients method.

Through VLC Media player

Yes, the best media player can do the job too. It may be a bit complicated but at least you will avoid annoying pop ups from the download sites.

You can apply this method on Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.

We should also point out to you that there will be differences when you use this method in different operating systems.

Go to the YouTube video you wish to download and copy the URL from the address bar. Then open the VLC player and click on “Media”, which is on the menu bar.

You then click on “Open Network Stream”. On the network tab, a box will appear in which you will paste the URL and then click “Play”. The video would start playing automatically.

If you are a Windows user, click on “Tools” on the toolbar and select “Codec information”. A screen containing information about the video will pop up.

From the “Location” bar that appears at the bottom, copy the URL and paste it on the address bar of your browser.

As the video plays within your browser, right-click and from the options provided, select “Save Video As”. A window will appear from which you will select the location of your video.

From there, all you will have to do is wait for your video to complete downloading.

Downsides to the VLC method

Once you download the video, you will not have the option of converting it to another format.

It is more complicated than using online tools. You may easily get lost in the many steps involved to reach the final point.

It does not allow you to choose the resolution which you prefer. If your video is of poor resolution, then you have to stick with it.

Most online tools have poor reputation or are just not reliable. They are normally laden with ads or even dubious means of making money such as cryptomining.

A sign of a suspicious site is that your system may find it harder to run or may become hotter.  We therefore insist that you avoid such sites.

Although we advise you use installed applications for downloading YouTube videos, some of these applications may slow down your browser. They may also become dysfunctional in case you mess up in the installation process.

The main thing to keep in mind when it comes to downloading YouTube videos is to stick within the law.
